In recognition of its contribution to the nation’s tourism landscape, the Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary in Murcia and the City of Sipalay in Negros Occidental bagged tourism awards during the Philippine Tourism Awards (PTA) 2025 on September 8 at Okada Manila, Parañaque City.
Mambukal’s Ishiwata Bathhouse, built around the healing sulfur springs of Mt. Kanlaon, grew from a retreat of sugar planters and locals, a barracks during World War II, and was later recognized as a historical landmark under the National Historical Institute in 2006, was honored as a Pillar of Philippine Tourism.
The bathhouse was built in the 1920s by Japanese engineer Paul Kokichi Ishiwata. It stands as a living reminder of how culture, architecture, and nature intertwine.
The Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary reaffirmed its commitment to embrace the future of sustainable and inclusive tourism in the province.
“The bathhouse remains at the heart of Mambukal, which serves as a haven for relaxation, healing, and ecotourism in the province,” it said in a social media post.
The award was received by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz II. The Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary is a provincial government-run resort in the province, and is set for expansion and facility upgrades.
Meanwhile, Sipalay City, which was known for its rich and scenic tourist spots and beaches, was recognized with the Best Tourism Destination Award.
The award was received by Sipalay City Councilor James Anthony Montilla Garrucho, Assistant Chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Tourism, and Jerick Lacson, Supervising Tourism Operations Officer.
Sipalay City stood as the best tourist destination across the Philippines, along with Baguio City and Biñan City, who placed as runners-up.
“As Sipalay proves, no matter how small or less known a destination may be, with dedication, vision, and community-driven action, it can rise to national and global recognition,” the Sipalay City Tourism Office stated in a social media post.
The Philippine Tourism Awards, organized by the Department of Tourism, is the country’s highest and most prestigious recognition program honoring destinations, organizations, and individuals that exemplify excellence and innovation in the tourism industry.*
