Man hacked dead over cauldron

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

A 54-year-old laborer was killed after a heated argument over a missing kitchen cauldron escalated into a hacking incident in Purok Mainuswagon, Barangay Sagasa, Bago City, on Sunday night, March 1.

The Bago City Component City Police Station (CCPS) identified the victim as a resident of the area, while the suspect was identified by the alias ‘Junior,’ a 25-year-old fellow laborer and neighbor.

Investigations revealed that the victim was drinking liquor with friends at a shanty around 5 p.m. At around 9 p.m., the suspect passed by and allegedly noticed the victim using a cauldron that the suspect claimed was his.

A confrontation ensued, leading the victim to go home and return while brandishing a bolo, or binangon.

In response, the suspect reportedly fetched a cane cutter, locally called an espading, and hacked the victim at the left lower portion of his mouth.

The victim collapsed on the road and was rushed by the Bago City Rescue Team to the Bago City Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect immediately fled the scene toward an unknown direction.

Police recovery teams found the victim’s bolo at the site, and a hot pursuit operation involving the SWAT Team is currently underway to apprehend the suspect.*
