Man with epilepsy drowns in Binalbagan river

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

A 51-year-old man drowned in a river in Barangay Bi-ao, in the town of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, May 31, after reportedly suffering an epileptic seizure while bathing.

The victim, identified only by his alias ‘Mark,’ was a resident of Sitio Golingan, the same barangay where the incident occurred.

Binalbagan Municipal Police Station (MPS) initial investigations revealed that witnesses who were electrofishing along the river discovered Mark’s body floating in the water.

One of the fishers approached the body and confirmed that he was already unresponsive.

The victim’s family later told authorities that Mark had a known medical history of epilepsy.

Investigators believe that he suffered an acute epileptic seizure while bathing in the river, which could’ve caused him to slip under the water and subsequently drown.

Mark was immediately rushed to the Binalbagan Infirmary, but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.*
