The tenants of the Manokan Country in Bacolod City are requesting for a dialog with Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez concerning the demand letter issued them by the City Legal Office with regards to their outstanding accounts with the city.

David Montoya, president of the Manokan Country Vendors’ Association, said they will request the mayor that they be given time to settle their accounts with the city. They are willing to pay after a final dialog with Councilor Celia Matea Flor, chairman of the Sanggunian Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse.

The 17 stall owners of the Manokan Country were served a final notice by the CLO to settle their arrears with the city before the end of September, or appropriate legal action will be taken against them for violating City Ordinance No. 575, series of 2011.

City Legal Officer Romeo Carlos Ting, Jr. said they have one month to settle their accounts with the City Treasurer’s Office.

Montoya said that during an earlier dialog with Flor, they proposed to pay their arrearages amounting to P8.6 million on a staggered basis while the city will get the interest. Out of the P300 they will be paying the city per day, 25 percent will go to their arrears while 75 percent will go to stall rental.

They have already received two demand letters and feel pressured to settle their accounts with the city even before their dialog with Flor has been finished, he said.

It can be recalled that during the administration of former mayor Monico Puentevella in 2017, SM Prime Holdings proposed to purchase the 1.3-hectare city-owned property in Barangay 12 where the Manokan Country is located at P20,500 per square meter.

Meanwhile, Ting said they will also issue demand letters to delinquent stall owners in the three major markets in Bacolod City. They have received information that some of these stall owners had their spaces or stalls rented out to other parties.*
