The Lions In Sight Mission of California and Nevada conducted a medical mission at the Javellana Mansion “Balay Daku” in Bago City yesterday afternoon, in partnership with the Bacolod City Host Lions Club, which had more than 600 beneficiaries.
Bago Councilor Marina “Mayette” Javellana-Yao yesterday said the free eye check-up and eyeglasses distribution was also held in cooperation with their Bago Team and former Public Works and Highways regional director Lea Delfinado.
Javellana-Yao said the team, composed of six doctors including technicians, also conducted a medical mission in La Carlota, Valladolid, Pulupandan, and San Enrique yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, Javellana-Yao said the Balay Daku or House of Hope launched an art competition with the theme “Ang Akon Handum kag Paglaum Para sa Bago” as part of the 59th Charter Day celebration of Bago City.
The art competition aims to inspire creativity and hope by encouraging artists to express their aspirations and dreams for Bago in the coming years. The awarding of winners will be on March 2, she said.
Balay Daku built in 1946 is called the House of Hope because of the many meaningful or inspiring stories of canal diggers or farm workers who became engineers, teachers, nurses because of the philanthropic work of their grandparents, Glicerio and Trinidad Javellana. It all started from one scholar, which ballooned to so many, Javellana-Yao said.
They may not have as many scholars as their grandparents used to have, but they still help. In their generation they also have academic excellence awards given to their scholars on the day they graduate from Bago City College, she said.*
