MMDC renews Abanse Negrense scholarships

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson (center) signs memorandum of agreement with the new batch of Abanse Negrense scholars*

Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC), in partnership with the office of Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson, has renewed the Abanse Negrense Business and Information Technology (I.T.) Scholarship for the third year.

This year, the scholarship covers full tuition and miscellaneous fees for almost 60 learners from the beginning of their college education until they graduate from MMDC, a press release from MMDC said.

Enhancing access to education and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is an important focus area of the Abanse Negrense sustainable development agenda for Negros Occidental. As digitalization continues to change the world, connectivity, and digital skills proficiency are foundational aspects in ensuring Negrenses are globally competitive across various industries – in line with the national government’s agenda for nation-building through progressive digital transformation.

By improving access to business and I.T. education, MMDC supports the continued digital transformation in the province through nurturing and upskilling a local workforce, preparing them to positively impact their local communities.

“Since its creation in 2022, in partnership with the office of Governor Lacson, the Abanse Negrense Business and I.T. Scholarship aims to transform the lives of Negrense learners by providing them with the support needed to pursue higher education. We are delighted to work together again to support the province’s holistic development through education,” said Engr. Dennis Tablante, Executive Director of MMDC. “Continuing this initiative further accelerates the digitalization of Negros Occidental by providing learners with a solid professional foundation grounded on Mapúan academic excellence and community impact through service.”

A key component of the Abanse Negrense Business and I.T. Scholarship is the volunteer work program wherein grantees must tender one year of volunteer work with the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental to support the advancement of the government’s digital projects and programs. This creates invaluable opportunities for learners to apply knowledge and soft skills in practical and real-world settings that stand to benefit from their education.

“The Abanse Negrense scholarship continues to empower our youth with the education they need to thrive in the digital age. Our ongoing partnership with MMDC underscores our commitment to nurturing future IT leaders in Negros Occidental. We look forward to inspiring more students to pursue their education and contribute to the province’s digital transformation,” said Lacson.

The new MMDC Abanse Negrense Business and I.T. scholars were selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholars can pursue a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with specializations ranging from development-focused programs like Software Development and Network & Cybersecurity, or business-focused programs such as Data Analytics, Marketing Technology, and Entrepreneurship Technology.

Through its renewed partnership, MMDC aims to foster scholars who will be instrumental in leading and advancing the province’s digital transformation efforts.
