The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported two ash eruptions at the crater of Kanlaon volcano on November 23, which lasted four to eight minutes.
At the same time, Phivolcs said it also recorded three volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours, as Kanlaon volcano also released 7,594 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Nov. 23.
The volcano, which is currently under Alert Level 2, also emitted a “moderate” 50-meter tall plume, which drifted southwest, as its degassing continues.
PHIVOLCS earlier warned people against prolonged exposure to sulfur dioxide as the fumes can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract.
A statement issued by the La Castellana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office called on residents to remain vigilant, and refrain from entering the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ).*
