There is a growing number of Negrenses, who engaged in livestock and poultry-raising for business, Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said yesterday.

Decena said they continue to buy original stocks from the two provincial farms at the Negros First Ranch in Murcia and the Provincial Livestock Breeding Center and Dairy Farm in La Carlota City.

These private individuals, who have the capacity to invest, have seen the potential of livestock and poultry as means of ensuring food security and supply, as well as an alternative livelihood to sustain their family income, he said.

He added the increasing number of interested farmer-entrepreneurs is making headway under the new normal due to the coronavirus pandemic, adding that farm animal supply could no longer cater to these demands as both provincial farms can no longer sufficiently accommodate breeder stocks of goat and cattle.

He added the PLBCDF has an average production of 400 to 500 free-range chickens per week.

He also said that PVO is still catching up with the heightened demand, and aims to expand its production facilities to meet the demands of Negrense, who shifted to animal-raising.

He said there are also 21 multiplier farms established by PVO, in collaboration with the local government units that have become a good source of boosting poultry and Pekin duck production as it has good growth potential.

While the two provincial farms are known for producing quality breeds of poultry as well as ruminants, along with the aim for production sufficiency, the PVO has committed to ensure that its livestock and poultry breeder stocks are of high quality and more resistant to disease and fluctuating weather conditions, Decena said.

He added that PVO is strengthening its various services to cater to the needs of its clients to ensure sufficiency of livestock and poultry supply.*
