The Bacolod Traffic and Transport Management Department (BTTMD) has clarified its stance regarding the use of flyovers by single motorcycles following recent online discussions questioning the legality of such prohibitions.
BTTMD head Atty. Reuben Mikhail Sabig said motorcycles are generally permitted to use flyovers unless the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has installed specific signage explicitly prohibiting them.
He clarified that flyovers fall under the jurisdiction of the DPWH as national projects, and they have the authority responsible for installing official signage and determining road markings, such as lane lines, in those areas.
Sabig said they only use signage as a basis, which they consider as part of the traffic rules, as there is no existing city ordinance.
He explained that if a sign prohibits motorcycles or slow-moving vehicles, then those rules must be followed; otherwise, riders are free to pass.
Sabig emphasized that the authority only relies on these official markings, and any apprehension would be based on the violation of disregarding traffic signs.
The clarification comes after a social media post went viral, questioning why some riders were being flagged at the Bata flyover.*
