Motorist delays fire truck response, BFP appeals for cooperation

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

The Bacolod City Fire Station has issued a formal appeal to the public to prioritize the right of way for emergency vehicles following a recent obstruction in the field.

Deputy City Fire Marshal Jemarie Tapiru reported that Fire Engine 264 encountered a critical delay while responding to a fire incident in Barangay Alijis, Bacolod City.

The delay was caused by a motorcycle rider who occupied the fast lane and failed to yield, despite the fire truck having its sirens and warning lights fully activated.

In a press statement, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) emphasized that such delays can have catastrophic consequences, noting that every second saved during a response can be the deciding factor between life and death or the total loss of property.

The agency reminded all motorists that yielding to emergency vehicles is not just a courtesy but a legal requirement under Republic Act No. 4136.

The BFP are calling on the community to remain vigilant and proactive while on the road.

They urge drivers to stay out of the fast lane when not overtaking and to immediately pull over when they hear sirens.

The BFP maintains that public cooperation is essential to ensuring that firefighters and medical teams can perform their duties safely and reach those in need without unnecessary interference.*
