Museo sang Bata sa Negros holds traditional Filipino games

Traditional Filipino games returned as part of the Sinigayan Festival celebration as Museo sang Bata sa Negros conducted its annual activity at the Sagay City Public Plaza on March 17, a press release from Sagay PIO said.

The event was transferred to the plaza this year to provide a wider and more accessible space for participating children, teachers, and facilitators.

Dr. Mel Serondo, Sangguniang Panlungsod member and member of the Board of Directors of Museo sang Bata sa Negros, welcomed the participants, teacher-trainers, and facilitators at the start of the program.

In his message, Museo sang Bata sa Negros president GJ Sarrosa said the activity has been a regular part of the Sinigayan Festival as the organization continues its efforts to encourage children to reconnect with Filipino culture and traditions.

He noted that many children today spend more time on mobile phones and television, making it important to create opportunities where they can experience traditional games.

Sarrosa also shared that the activity remains one of the unique components of the festival, adding that it was his first time attending the event since joining the organization as a volunteer last year.

Sagay Mayor Leo Rafael “Bebo” Cueva, a supporter of the Museo sang Bata sa Negros, congratulated the children who joined the games and recognized the continued participation of schools in the activity.

He thanked the teachers for bringing their students to the event each year and for guiding them to take part in activities that promote culture and tradition.

The mayor also encouraged the participants to enjoy the games and take part in the celebration.

Among the traditional games played were kadang, dama, sack race, and sungka, along with a lukay weaving contest.

The lukay weaving contest highlighted the children’s creativity and skills as they transformed lukay into different forms and designs.*
