Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Negros Occidental will kick off today the 20th Tourism Week celebration that will run until September 27.

Anchored on the theme “Tourism: Building Peace, Fostering Knowledge”, the Tourism Excellence Awards will start off the online festivities, which will be streamed live over the Negros Occidental Tourism Division’s Facebook page, followed by the “Halin sa Kusina” book launching.

A virtual tour guiding competition will be conducted tomorrow.

On September 24, there will be a ceremonial unveiling of the local government units’ tourism signage at the Panaad Park in Bacolod City and a song relaunch of “Sa Negros may Tubo kag Madamo pa”.

On September 25 to 26, there will be tourism webinars, while on the last day, a photo exhibit, entitled “Iron Dinosaurs in Sugarlandia: Through the Lens of a Tourist” will open.

A virtual tour of Negros Occidental will cap off the weeklong celebration.

Last week, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed a resolution declaring September 22-27 as Tourism Week in the province of Negros Occidental.

The resolution, authored by Board Member Araceli Somosa, chair of the SP Committee on Tourism, said the SP believes that the celebration will boost the local tourism in the province, geared toward helping rural communities that have been hit hard by Covid-19 pandemic with significant tourism activities.

“In spite of the circumstance brought by Covid-19, celebrating tourism week on its 20th year with a renewed focus on the benefits of tourism to rural communities is timely. As we face challenges, we also believe in the opportunities the rural communities may bring,” the resolution added.*
