The local government unit of Sibulan in Negros Oriental is adopting the Quick Response (QR) code as a contact tracing tool to aid in the fight against the coronavirus disease 2019.

Indira Requiron-Puspus, town tourism officer and Covid-19 information officer, said they have started the planning and information dissemination stages in preparation for the implementation of the QR Code tracing system.

In a meeting with Mayor Jose Abiera and department heads, she said that the LGU has already started developing the QR Codes to be posted at establishments and government centers.

Abiera is also hoping that once this is proven to be successful, QR codes will also be installed in public transport systems such as multi-cabs and tricycles, she added.

Android phone users are to download the QR codes of Sibulan from RadarPh.online and this can be scanned when entering establishments and other places in that town that will be initially piloted for this undertaking, she added.

For residents who do not have android phones, they have to continue with manually filling out locator forms at establishments, offices, churches, and other places frequently visited by people, such as the marketplace.

Puspus said they are also studying how to apply the QR code system to non-residents of Sibulan, who will be transacting business in the town, considering that the airport, seaport, and the provincial police headquarters are also located there.

Initial concerns such as “invasion of privacy” surfaced during the discussions but Puspus said this will not happen as data in the QR code will be solely used for contact tracing purposes and will not be shared with others.*PNA
