Dengue cases in Negros Occidental continue to surge, as a total of 4,093 cases have already been logged from January 1 to August 16, marking an increase of 918 cases compared to the 3175 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.
The Provincial Health Office also reported an increase of dengue-related deaths, to nine.
All the 31 component cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental have at least one case of dengue, with Bago City remaining on top of the PHO list, having the most cases at 965.
As of Aug. 2, highly urbanized Bacolod City has also logged 671 dengue cases, with four deaths, according to the report of its City Health Office.
The age group with the most cases ranges from 11 to 20 years old.
Dengue is an infection caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
The infection triggers a severe flu-like illness often followed by a severe drop in an infected person’s platelet count.
Other symptoms include severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, full-body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands or rashes.*
