The revival of the Negros Island Region (NIR) tops the list of a wish list of Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson under the incoming administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer earlier said that presumptive president Marcos Jr. has committed to supported the NIR revival, as long as it is through the passage of a law.

Ferrer led the political campaign of Marcos and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio, while Lacson supported the presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.

“It’s done, and I’m calling on all elected officials to do our share for our country, good governance,” Lacson said.

“We should all hope that the Marcos administration does well for our country, and makes every Filipino a winner.” he stressed.

The NIR was first established on May 29, 2015 by then President Benigno Aquino III via Executive Order 183.

However, the region was dissolved in October of 2017 by President Rodrigo Duterte, pointing out that establishing a region needed a law, not an executive order.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and JV Ejercito, who landed among the top 12 winning senatorial aspirants, and newly proclaimed Sixth District Rep. Dino Yulo earlier expressed their full support to the NIR restoration.

Lacson also said that he also wants the proposed Panay-Guimaras-Negros bridge materialized.

The Department of Public Works on Wednesday announced that the Korean government through the Export Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) has extended $56.6-million (P2.96-billion) loan to the Philippine government for the 32.5-kilometer bridge project that will connect the three islands which has seven provinces.

The loan will finance engineering services including preliminary design, detailed engineering design and procurement assistance that are required prior to the construction of the bridges.

The Department of Finance said actual construction could start in 2025. The construction of the bridge has been pushed since the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo.

Also in the list of Lacson is the policy where importation of sugar will be allowed “only when necessary.”

Negros-based sugar planter groups have filed a case against officials of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) for allowing sugar importation at the height of sugar milling season.

Lacson also said he wants the president to appoint a Negrense to head the SRA.*
