Government soldiers seized a temporary camp of the New People’s Army following an encounter with communist rebels on Tuesday in Sitio Calagmakan, Brgy. Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

Lt. Col. Erwin Cariño, 15th Infantry Battalion commander, said yesterday that about 20 members of the Sentro de Grabidad Platoon of the NPA South West Front abandoned their temporary camp after 15 minutes of gunbattle with patrolling soldiers, and scampered to various directions.

No casualty was reported on the government side, Cariño said.

But he added that the 15IB soldiers scouring the abandoned rebel camp, which can accommodate 60 persons, recovered an Improvised Explosive Device with electrical wirings, a generator set with gasoline, binoculars, BP apparatus, assorted office supplies and foodstuff, cooking utensils, personal belongings and subversive documents.

Cariño thanked the civilians for the timely information that led to the discovery and seizure of the temporary lair of the rebels.

“Their cooperation is a manifestation of the growing mass resistance to and abdication of the presence and influence of the NPA terrorist group,” he said.

Cariño added they will continue to conduct focused military operations, as he also expects that more NPA lairs will be seized with the cooperation of residents in rebel-affected communities.

Col. Noel Baluyan, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, said that the vigilance of the people, coupled with the dedication of Army soldiers in putting the local communist armed conflict to its end, will be an edge to their mission.*
