Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson emphasized the crucial role of the media as agents of information and truth during the Negros Press Club’s 89th induction ceremony at the Sugarland Hotel, Bacolod City Saturday.
“To our newly elected officers, as you take your oaths today, may your commitment to the ideals of promoting press freedom and cultivating an empowered and accountable media practice be renewed with vigor and inspired dedication. Your leadership comes at a time when the role of journalists, reporters, and media practitioners is more crucial than ever in upholding truth, fostering public discourse, and strengthening democracy,” the governor said.
“As I reflect on the profound impact of the different challenges our Negrense community has faced in recent years, I am reminded of how essential reliable information is during challenging times,” Lacson said.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all members of the Negros Press Club for your unwavering commitment to disseminating information. Your work has made a significant difference in our fight against misinformation and in strengthening public trust in credible journalism,” he said.
In this digital age, where information spreads rapidly— both truth and misinformation-your role as journalists becomes even more vital. As such, the press continues to be the voices that guide, inform, and even inspire. You are the bridge between truth and the people, between the government and its constituents, Lacson said.

In times of disaster, the information you disseminate saves lives. In times of crisis, your report of facts can calm fears and lead to informed choices. In times of peace and development, you inspire and uplift. In times of uncertainty, your reports shed light on the truth. In times of progress, your stories celebrate the achievements of our communities, and in times of political discourse, you mediate and uphold the democratic values that hold our nation together, he said.
Tonight’s theme, “NPC @ 89: Leadership with Marksmanship,” resonates even more as we welcome the leadership of our incoming president, Mark. Just as a marksman aims with precision, effective leadership requires clarity, focus, and a steadfast commitment to truth. May this serve as a challenge for each of you to continue honing your skills and refining your ability to deliver accurate and impactful reporting, Lacson said.
As you take your oaths today, let this new term of office inspire you to renew your commitment to press freedom and uphold the ideals of an empowered and accountable media, he said.
As Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ann Handley said, “Good content always has an objective; it is created with intent, and therefore triggers action.” May this serve as a reminder that every story you tell and every report you publish must be free from malice and prejudice, written and shared with integrity, for your words carry the power to inform, influence, and inspire positive change. Let your story be always guided by meaningful purpose and the pursuit of truth, Lacson said.

“As I have said in the recent induction of officers of the KBP, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental strive to serve, to develop policies, and to deliver relevant and responsive programs for the benefit of ali Negrenses. However, no matter how well-intentioned our plans are, they will not achieve their full potential without the support of the people-support that is built on understanding and trust. This is where you, our partners in media, come in,” he said.
You are our allies in governance. Through accurate reporting, you help the public understand the direction we are taking. Through critical analysis, you keep us accountable. And through responsible journalism, you encourage active citizenship, Lacson said.
As we move forward in this new chapter of the Negros Press Club, may you continue to be the vigilant eyes and ears of society, the unflinching voice of truth, and our strong partners in nation-building. Let us work together in fostering a society where trust based on integrity and unity prevail. Rest assured the Province of Negros Occidental remains a steadfast supporter of your endeavors, he added.
Lacson administered the oath of NPC president Mark Gabriel Salanga, while La Castellana Mayor Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan swore into office the new set of officers of the Negros Press Club for 2025-2026: Primerose Catherine Tejida – vice president, Lourd John Diaz – secretary, Nona Magbanua – treasurer, Henry James Toga – auditor, and directors Maureen Andrea Soliguen, Eden Thea Aboso, Merlinda Pedrosa, and Nico Delfin.
On the other hand, Salanga administered the oath of office of the new members of NPC.
Meanwhile, other guests present at the 89th induction ceremony of the Negros Press Club were Board Member Añejo Nicor, Bacolod City Police Director Col. Joeresty Coronica, and Neg. Occ. Police Director Col. Rainerio De Chavez.*
