‘Off The Chest’ brings rap royalty to Bacolaodiat Festival

There can only be one Rap King of Visayas.

Bacolod’s Bacolaodiat Festival on February 1 will host the grand finals of Off the Chest: A one-of-a-kind rap competition that gives a platform to rising talents and emerging voices in regional hip-hop.

From qualifying rounds in Cebu and Bacolod where aspiring rappers competed with their lyrical prowess and rap musicality,  Cebu’s D A P and Bacolod’s JERRAN will meet face-to-face for an all out battle of “beats, bara, buga” with the hopes of winning multiple cash prizes and a lucrative recording deal.

The competition takes inspiration from rap “cyphers” where a group of rappers perform together on a single track with each rapper having their own dedicated section in that performance. This format presents a unique challenge to the contestants as they must flow to the beat of the track without sacrificing their narrative audacity nor their personal authenticity.

BRGR, awarded 2023’s producer of the year by Pills.ph and LOCAL PH, will be producing all the tracks that the grand finalists will be performing. Bryan Ermac (a.k.a BMAC), known for his appearances in Spotify Kalye X, Sea Games, and Ironman, will be the feature host for the grand finals.

While the rap war of bars between D A P and JERRAN promises to be an unforgettable show for Bacolodnon hip-hop aficionados, attendees of the Off The Chest Grand Finals can also expect to vibe to the verses of some of the country’s biggest rap stars.  Pinoy Rap Icons, Gloc-9 and Flow G are confirmed to conquer the Lacson Street Stage together with Smugglaz and Omar Baliw; making this one of the biggest hip-hop events to ever take place in the city, a press release from the organizers said.

The Bacolaodiat Festival, one of the country’s biggest Lunar New Year celebrations, is expected to welcome the year of the wood snake this January 31 to February 2, in the city of smiles. Now in its 20th year, the festival is expected to bring in exciting cultural activities and performances as the celebrations fill the colorful streets of Bacolod.

The festival aims to celebrate not just the upcoming Lunar New Year but also the strong ties that the local Filipino-Chinese community and the city have formed over the years by displaying traditions normally practiced by the Chinese in welcoming the new year.
