Ordinance passed for animal welfare desks in Bacolod brgys

Bacolod City Council has passed the Animal Welfare Ordinance of Bacolod City, which will establish an Animal Welfare Desk in all barangays where people can report incidents of animal cruelty and neglect and may receive proper guidance and assistance.

A dedicated animal welfare officer shall oversee the daily operations of the desk and ensure its compliance with the ordinance.

Passed on third and final reading on September 18, the ordinance was proposed by Committee on Markets and Slaughterhouse Chairperson Councilor Celia Matea Flor with councilors Em Ang, Danna Marie Barzo, Simplicia Distrito, Al Victor Espino, Vladimir Gonzalez, Renecito Novero, Lady Gles Pallen, Claudio Puentevella, Cindy Rojas, Israel Salanga, Thaddy Sayson, Psyche Marie Sy, and Jason Villarosa as co-proponents.

Whenever possible, each barangay is also encouraged to establish and maintain a barangay animal shelter to cater to the needs of stray, abandoned, or abused animals found within their area.

“With the Animal Welfare Ordinance, we ensure the protection and dignity of animals in our community, fostering a more compassionate and responsible society,” Flor highlights.

According to a press release, the legislation reflects the commitment of the Bacolod City Council to treat all living beings with respect and dignity, ensuring that animals are safeguarded from cruelty, neglect, and exploitation.*
