About P150 million will be poured in for the renovation of the three main public markets of Bacolod, City Administrator Em Ang said yesterday.

Ang said that P50 million will be allotted each for the Bacolod North, Central and South markets, adding that the renovation will start as soon as funding from the Department of Budget Management is available.

She said that while the conditions of the three markets are not yet considered deplorable, the city government hopes that that their renovation will take place this year.

Ang said the repair and improvement of these markets are continuing, only they are being done by section and depending on the availability of funds.

MEETING WITH VENDORS

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Ang, and Vice Mayor El Cid Famillaran held a consultative meeting with the officers of market vendors’ associations to discuss the renovation plans recently.

Ang said that during the meeting, they were able to identify which parts of the markets would be prioritized when the repairs start.

GROUPS REPRESENTED

Joining the meeting were the presidents of vendors’ associations, like Efren Mangalus of the Citywide Market Vendors Association, and also of the Libertad Market Vendors Association, Ramil Real – Amelia Market Vendors Association, Rethelyn Vinas – Kaisahan sang Bacolodnon sa Merkado-Central Market chapter, Marlet Ongada – Central Market Vendors Association, Lucelyn de la Paz – Burgos Vendors Association, Rubin Casipe – Burgos Fish Vendors Association, and Joe Martin Coniendo – Burgos Market Vendors Brotherhood Association, among others.

City Engineer’s Office head Aladino Agbones, Xenia Locsin, Joebert Tambanillo, Jaries Encabo, and executive assistant Ernie Pineda, head of CMO-Sectoral Concerns Office also attended the meeting.

Leonardia had told the DAILY STAR earlier that the repairs of the markets are needed immediately since they are already old and were built decades ago. As to the Vendors’ Plaza, Ang said they have yet to decide what to do with it after the plan of utilizing it for a night market did not push through.*
