Pandemic allowance in limbo

BY ADRIAN P. NEMES III

The granting of the Pandemic Emergency Relief Allowance, especially for workers affected by Covid-19 in Western Visayas, is still in limbo, Wennie Sancho, who is the labor representative to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Region 6, said.

Sancho also said that in their meeting Wednesday, the Board scheduled public hearings via zoom regarding the matter.

The meeting in Iloilo will be on June 10, June 23 for Capiz, Aklan and Boracay Island, and July 28 in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City.

The labor sector believes in the good intention of the wage determination review, but with the start of sectoral consultations, there will be a delay in the deliberations due to the restrictions imposed by zoom meetings, Sancho said.

The labor sector is hoping that the Bayanihan 3 would be implemented sooner than later while the workers are waiting for the decision on whether the P20-25 PERA will be granted or not, he said.

Based on records of the General Alliance of Workers Associations, the amount to be restored to the purchasing power of the workers is P90 per day, but Sancho said labor is asking for P25 per day which is only 38 percent of P90.

In Western Visayas, minimum wage workers are earning from P310 to P395 per day, depending on their work classification under Wage Order 25.*
