With nine days left before the end of the month-long extension of the country’s voter registration, Akbayan Partylist launched on Thursday a “National Day of Voter Registration” to mobilize more people to register to vote in the 2022 polls.

Dubbed as “Sakay Rehistro,” Akbayan members from different parts of the country provided voter registrants, especially first-time young voters, with free transportation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) registration sites.

The initiative was simultaneously conducted in Isabela, Olongapo, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Laguna, Bicol, Cebu, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Bais and General Santos City. Akbayan members used their cars, jeepneys, motorbikes, and other means of transportation to ferry voter registrants to registration sites.

Akbayan First Nominee Perci Cendaña said “We have nine days left to register. Let’s make the most of it. The extension of the registration must lead to increased voter participation and better election.”

“We should not waste our victory over the extension of the voter registration. Our victory must lead to a more vibrant electoral democracy,” he said.

Akbayan Youth chairperson Dr. RJ Naguit said that COVID-19 has significantly affected daily travel patterns and the mobility behavior of many commuters.

“By providing our voter registrants more transportation options that comply with health and safety protocols, we contribute to lessening the chances of voter disenfranchisement. For every registrant that we could bring to registration areas, will ensure that one Filipino could cast his vote,” he added.*
