A regular 3×3 basketball tournament for women that has the support of the Philippine Basketball Association will make its debut soon in the country.

In an article posted on the PBA website, Commissioner Willie Marcial said that a 3×3 tournament for women will follow launched once the league’s 3×3 tournament is officially launched.

Marcial said that women’s basketball is one of his pet programs after his appointment as commissioner in 2018. Women’s tournament he said is being integrated to the regular calendar of the PBA.

He said he always wanted to launch a tournament for women and they can start with the 3×3 competition.

The project is already in the pipeline as the league is set to formally launch the inaugural men’s 3×3 meet this season until the COVID-19 pandemic hit the sporting world.

Marcial said that when the health situation improves next year, they hope to launch the PBA three-a-side competition with Alaska governor Richard Bachmann as the committee chairman.

“From there, the women’s side would follow suit,” he said.

He added that the plans were stalled but he always wanted the approvial of the PBA Board about the women’s 3×3 tournament.

The proposal already got an initial endorsement from Board chairman Ricky Vargas, who recalls the PBA having sponsored a 3×3 meet among women players during the time of former commissioner ChitoNarvasa.

Vargas said he personally agrees with the plan of bringing in 3×3 women’s basketball.

“There was a time when we have the women’s basketball. It was on a trial basis, but it was okay,” he said.

Womens’ basketball in the country has attracted a lot of attention after the Philippiine team won the gold medal in SEA Games last year both in team basketball and the 3×3 event.*
