Pedestrian killed, cyclist injured in Ilog bus crash

• RICHARD T. CABALLERO JR.

A pedestrian was killed and a cyclist was injured in a road crash involving a Ceres bus on Sunday evening, along the National Highway of Barangay Galicia, Ilog, Negros Occidental.

Killed in the crash was Joseph Castillo, 50, a businessman, and the injured victim was identified as France Bolneo, an 18-year-old student. Both were residents of the barangay.

Initial investigation revealed that the bus was traveling in a southern direction, while the cyclist was on his bicycle, going home from the store when he was sideswiped by the bus.

As the bus driver swerved to avoid the cyclist, the pedestrian who was crossing the road was also hit.

Both victims sustained head injuries and were brought to the nearest hospital, where the pedestrian victim showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead on arrival.

The injured cyclist was later transferred to Holy Mother of Mercy Hospital in Kabankalan City for further treatment.

The Ceres bus damaged its windshield and was temporarily impounded by the police, while the driver is under the custody of Ilog MPS for proper disposition.*
