The Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a warning that making bomb-related remarks, even as a joke, is a criminal offense and can endanger lives.
This warning comes after a female passenger bound for Bacolod City was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 on January 26, for quipping about a bomb while stowing her luggage in the overhead bin.
The passenger’s comment alerted the cabin crew to activate emergency protocols, leading to a full sweep of the aircraft by Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group.
“Even a single statement can disrupt airport operations, cause panic, and put everyone at risk. The PNP will act promptly to ensure the safety of all passengers and personnel,” PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.
While no explosives were found, the traveler was taken into custody by the authorities and the PNP said that criminal charges for unjust vexation and violating the Bomb Joke Law are now being prepared.
“Every passenger must be aware that joking about bombs is not only dangerous but also a criminal offense. Think before you joke—it could save lives and prevent serious legal consequences,” Nartatez added.*
