Amid the threat of Monkeypox that has been detected just across the Guimaras Strait, the Department of Health has ordered medical facilities in Negros Island Region to prioritize for treatment, individuals with skin lesions and those with its symptoms.
The DOH NIR made the advisory in the wake of confirmation of a mpox case in Iloilo, while four others are currently under observation.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan said they are investigating two patients, including a toddler in Pontevedra who suffered rashes on the neck, and a bus driver, who were brought to the Don Salvador Benedicto Memorial District Hospital in La Carlota City and Tabugon Community Hospital in Kabankalan City, respectively, for treatment.
Based on the assessments of two hospital chiefs and photos sent to her, Pinongan said the cases do not appear to be mpox. She, however, said that they cannot make an official declaration until a specimen is taken and subjected to laboratory testing.
Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus and usually results in mild illness with rashes. Transmission is through skin-to-skin contact.
DOH said mpox symptoms may include fever, chills, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, extreme fatigue, headache, sore throat, anal pain, and painful urination.
Pinongan said that anyone showing symptoms is advised to isolate themselves and seek immediate medical attention.
As to reports of similar cases in Bacolod City, City Health Officer Dr. Grace Tan said they are investigating if it fits the case definition of mpox.
Tan, however, encouraged those persons exhibiting mpox symptoms to immediately report to them for monitoring and surveillance.
DOH urged the public to observe minimum health standards, such as frequent hand washing, wearing of masks in crowded areas, and refraining from contact with individuals who have mpox or who are manifesting symptoms.*
