PRO 7 dispatches 200 officers to Negros Oriental

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Police Regional Office 7 has deployed an additional 200 police personnel to bolster disaster response efforts, in connection with the ongoing restiveness of Kanlaon volcano, and to ensure smooth operations during the upcoming elections in Negros Oriental.

PBrig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, regional police director for Central Visayas, has assured Negros Oriental residents that the PRO 7 vows comprehensive law enforcement support, effective disaster response, and facilitate peaceful and orderly midterm elections scheduled for May this year.

Negros Oriental is likely to be categorized as an election area of concern by the Commission on Elections, because of election-related incidents and intense political rivalries in the past years, according to Comelec regional director for Negros Island Region Atty. Lionel Marco Castillano.

The province was placed under Comelec control during the October 2024 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, following the assassination of former Governor Roel Degamo at his residential compound in Pamplona town.

In a statement, Maranan said “Our objective is to ensure that citizens can cast their votes free from fear and violence, empowering them to choose deserving and most qualified leaders who will contribute to the progress of the province.”

He also urged police officers to also prioritize their safety, as they perform their mandate.

Among the personnel recently dispatched to Negros Oriental, Maranan said that 100 are members of the Regional Mobile Force Company (RMFB) 7 who have been tasked to beef up the local police in establishing anti-criminality checkpoints, while the remaining 100 personnel are from the Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) who will focus on evacuation and humanitarian efforts to support the residents of Canlaon City.

He assured the troops that the PRO7 leadership is providing all necessary logistical support and budgetary resources for their mission in Negros Oriental.

Maranan also encouraged Negros Oriental residents to remain vigilant and actively support the police in maintaining peace and order, ensuring a successful May 12 elections.

Despite the recent creation of the Negros Island Region, the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office remains under the supervision of PRO 7.*
