Probe sought into AICS irregularities in Victorias City

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

A thorough probe was ordered by Mayor Abelardo Bantug III regarding alleged irregularities in the distribution of AICS (Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation) to beneficiaries in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.

In a statement, Bantug said he was informed that beneficiaries received an amount less than the amount due to them, and were even ordered to return a certain amount to the person preparing the list of recipients.

These reports have left us frustrated, saddened, and deeply concerned. What should have been an opportunity for relief and support for our constituents was instead tainted by exploitation and abuse, the mayor said.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Victorias has also issued a statement condemning the alleged irregularities in the payout of AICS in Barangay 21, Victorias City.

We fully support all efforts to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that every Victioriasanon receives the assistance they rightfully deserve, the Victorias City Council, led by Vice Mayor Francis Frederick “Derek” Palanca said.

Bantug disclosed that more than 150 individuals formally filed their complaints, who were assisted by the City Social Welfare and Development Office, as well as the City Legal Office, in the preparation of their sworn affidavits.

We have also gathered videos, audio recordings, and screenshots of conversations between the complainants and the persons responsible. These pieces of evidence will be consolidated and formally endorsed to the DSWD regional office for filing of the appropriate criminal cases against those involved, the mayor further said.

This is unacceptable. We do not – and will never – tolerate such acts, Bantug stressed.

The Negros Occidental 3rd district congressional office also issued a statement strongly denying involvement on the issue, stressing that all distributed funds are fully accounted for and that every recipient has been verified.

We emphasize that we do not authorize or allow anyone to act as a recruiter of beneficiaries on our behalf, the statement said.

It also stressed that they will never tolerate the abuse and misuse of public funds intended for the people of the district, especially for those who need it most.

The congressional office of Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez also warned individuals spreading malicious, irresponsible and misleading information about the matter will be dealt with accordingly.*
