The proposal to declare the national highway of E. B. Magalona as a Traffic Discipline Zone got support from road safety stakeholders.

Mayor Marvin Malacon presided over the second meeting with road safety stakeholders June 9, for the drafting of an ordinance declaring the national highway of E. B. Magalona a Traffic Discipline Zone.

The town’s 12-kilometer highway stretches from its border in Silay City to its border in Victorias City.

Among the proposed measures in the ordinance including assigning Land Transportation Office (LTO)- deputized officers to apprehend traffic violators, increasing traffic violation fees,  putting up of rumble strips in strategic areas and those leading to highway bends and school zones, deploying traffic law enforcers in densely populated areas like schools to conduct traffic direction and control, and conducting massive information and education campaign to motorists plying the highway daily, and conducting the same in schools.

The proposal to declare the highway as a Traffic Discipline Zone stemmed from fatal vehicular accidents in the area, the most recent having claimed the lives of a Grade 10 student last December 15, and a 43-year-old father on May 13.

The declaration of the highway as a Traffic Discipline Zone will allow the imposition of stricter traffic rules and added security measures to avoid further tragic road crashes, Malacon stressed.

Attending the meeting were Vice Mayor Eric Matulac, Sangguniang Bayan Member Rosalita Arsenal, president of Liga ng mga Barangay; LTO E. B. Magalona District Office officer-in-charge Reuben Tampos, PSSg Renan Bustillo of PNP-HPG Provincial Highway Patrol Team, Engr. Aldren Raboy, engineering assistant of DPWH- Negros Occidental First District Engineering Office, DILG- E. B. Magalona head Joji Kristine Barcelona, PLt. Minardo Ellaga, deputy chief of police of Municipal Police Station; and Atty. Ryan Montoro, secretary of the Sangguniang Bayan.
