The Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office wrap up sports activities for 2022 with the Governor’s Cup 2 on 2 Chess Team Championship, Abanse Negrense Swimming Tournament Provincial Championship, Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament, Abanse Negrense Badminton Tournament Provincial Championship, and the Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament, all this weekend.

The Governor’s Cup 2 on 2 Chess Team Championship is on December 8 at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building. The battle of the minds starts 9 a.m.

Apart from the quest for the next provincial grandmaster, Negrense swimmers from the Northern and Southern Negros Districts are set to compete for the championship title on December 8 at the Sta. Fe Resort in Brgy. Granada, Bacolod City.

The swimming tournament will start at 7:30 a.m. and the awarding ceremony will be by 4 p.m.

Furthermore, badminton enthusiasts can troop to the Po Hang Badminton Court for the Provincial Championship matches on December 10. The opening ceremony will commence at 9 a.m. and will reportedly be led by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Aspiring young boxing champs from all over the province, on the other hand, are slated to showcase their skills at the finals of the Governor’s Cup Provincial Boxing Tournament, to be held at the Municipal Covered Court of Don Salvador Benedicto.

The semi-final bouts will be on December 9 to be followed by the championship matches on the following day. Four Division World Champion and Longest Reigning Filipino World Champ Donnie “Ahas” Nietes is expected to make a special appearance.

Finally, the provincial championships will end the Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contributions to Negros Basketball) on December 10 at the STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU) Gymnasium at 1pm. The STI-WNU team possess home court advantage as they play Dumaguete City for the title.

The tournaments are part of Gov. Lacson’s sports initiative, the Abanse Negrense Grassroots Sports Development Programs. Through this advocacy, the sports-loving governor aims to inspire, encourage, and motivate our local youth to develop and improve their skills and abilities in sports. It also emphasizes the significance of balancing academic performance and sports participation.*
