PSO lines up June activities

The Abanse Negrense Sports Programs of Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, the Provincial Sports Office (PSO) has prepared several provincial and national tournaments for Negrense youth in the coming months.

On top of the list is the Abanse Negrense Basketball Elite Camp on June 5 -7, at Montalbo Covered Court in Bacolod City. This is in collaboration with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Inc. (SBP), and the camp will be led by Coaches Norman Black and Bacon Austria.

Following the camp is the participation of qualified Negrense athletes to SBP’s Pambansang 3X3 Regionals Finals on June 8-9 in Iloilo City. A total of 10 teams (5 boys and 5 girls) are set to represent the province.

The first-ever Abanse Negrense Governor’s Cup National Karatedo Championship is set on June 15 at Ayala Malls Capitol Central. The inaugural tournament also includes a Refresher Course for Officiating Officials, to be conducted by national referees. At least 20 teams from the cities of Iloilo, Dumaguete City, Cebu, Sibulan, Cebu, Tagbilaran, Silay, Talisay, Tagum, Pasig, Caloocan, Makati, Bacolod, and Negros Occidental have confirmed participation.

In addition the Provincial Sports Office is also gearing up for a multi-sports festival at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium this June. Dubbed the first Abanse Negrense Pana-ad Sports Fest, the tournament will feature eight sporting events, including arnis, athletics, boxing, chess, football/futsal, karatedo, softball, and taekwondo. The age categories included are U-12, U-14, U-16, and U-18 (boys and girls).

Apart from the tournaments, Provincial Sports Coordinator and Executive Assistant for Sports Anthony Carlo Agustin also revealed the plans to conduct licensing and training courses for coaches and referees. Even though his team has continuously conducted refresher courses for referees in various LGUs in the province, they are planning to collaborate again with SBP and bring legendary coaches – Hall of Fame Coach Jose “Joe” Lipa Jr. and former San Miguel Beermen Coach Joseph Enrique “Jong” Uichico – as resource speakers for the coaches’ licensing and training courses.*
