Public market security guard shoots ‘mentally-ill’ man dead

A security guard shot to death a man believed to be mentally-ill at the Kabankalan New Public Market in Barangay 1, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental on Monday afternoon.

Initial investigation revealed that the victim, alias Alim, 33, believed to be mentally-ill from Barangay Orong, turned off the main power switch of the establishment, prompting the suspect, alias Joe, 35, who was the security guard on duty, to inspect the area.

Upon checking, the security guard approached the victim and ordered him to leave. The victim allegedly became unruly and resisted the guard’s instructions and when the guard attempted to apprehend him, he tried to flee.

The suspect chased the victim and upon reaching, the victim continued to resist and failed to cooperate.

During the commotion, the guard drew his 9mm service firearm and then shot the victim several times, hitting the different parts of the victim’s body.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his gunshot wounds.

After the incident, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to Kabankalan Police Station and turned over his issued firearm which was used in committing the incident, for proper disposition.

Authorities are now conducting follow-up operations to locate the immediate family of the victim for official notification and proper disposition of the cadaver.*
