Army soldiers have recovered have recovered a cache of explosives and ammunition on September 22 at an abandoned camp of the New People’s Army in Sitio Double Yarding, Brgy. Mahalang, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Members of the 94th Infantry Battalion retrieved eight anti-personnel mines, two anti-tank landmines and 1,932 live ammunition for a .30 caliber machine gun, believed to be owned and hidden by remnants of the Central Negros 2, Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, disclosed yesterday.
The discovery and retrieval of cache of explosives and ammunition came after 16 NPA members of the Central Negros 1, also operating in central Negros, surrendered to authorities in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.
Pasaporte said that the recovery of explosives and ammunition would further reduce and degrade the capability of CN2 operating in central Negros.
Lt. Col. Van Donald Almonte, 94IB commander, said the recovery of improvised explosives and ammunition will save the lives of innocent civilians and rebel supporters, aside from government troopers, who may be victimized by the terror activities of the NPA.
Anti-personnel mines are designed against human targets to injure or kill the victims, and are capable of damaging light and heavy vehicles. On the other hand, the antitank mines are designed to destroy or damage heavy vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers.
What more if it will be used against humans, Almonte asked.
Pasaporte thanked the former rebels who pinpointed the location of the hidden explosives.*
