Rebel killed, firearms seized in Binalbagan encounter

A suspected New People’s Army rebel died, while two firearms were recovered by Army soldiers, following an armed encounter yesterday in Sitio Caranawan, Brgy. Amontay, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

1Lt.  Mary Liza Joy de Guzman, Civil Military Operations officer of the 62nd Infantry Battalion, disclosed that 62IB soldiers were responding to reports from civilians on the presence of armed men in the area.

Upon arrival in the area, the Army soldiers engaged in armed clashes with about five suspected NPA rebels, which lasted about five minutes.

According to de Guzman, the fleeing rebels, with some of them reportedly wounded, left behind their slain comrade, and Army soldiers recovered an M1 garand rifle, a .45 caliber pistol, and a backpack containing personal belongings and subversive documents.

Lt. Col. J Jay Javines, spokesperson of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Divisioon, disclosed that those rebels encountered by 62IB soldiers are remnants of the dismantled Central Negros 1, under the Komiteng Rehiyonal Negros/ Cebu/Bohol/Siquijor.

The identity of the slain rebel has not been determined as of press time.

The infantry units of 3rd Infantry Division stationed in Western and Central Visayas have already been alerted, in connection with the founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines, a political wing of the NPA, which is on December 26.*
