Rebel killed in Himamaylan encounter

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

A remnant of the New People’s Army yesterday died in an armed encounter with Army soldiers on Friday in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Soldiers of the 94th Infantry Battalion chanced upon five suspected rebels, believed to be remnants of the dismantled Central Negros 2, leading to a gunbattle, according to initial military reports.

The slain suspected rebel was identified by the Philippine Army as a certain alias Gringo.

Army soldiers also recovered an M16 assault rifle and personal belongings of the fleeing rebels.

No Army soldiers were hurt in the encounter, and as of press time, they are still in pursuit of the fleeing rebel remnants.*
