Rebel on the run, surrenders

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

One of the fleeing New People’s Army rebels, who was in an armed encounter on June 6 with Army soldiers in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, has surrendered, Lt. Col. Ziegfred Tayaban, 94th Infantry Battalion commander, disclosed on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old self-confessed rebel is presently under the custody of the authorities.

Tayaban said the surrendered rebel could no longer endure sufferings within their group, and wanted to rejoin his family.

The June 6 encounter claimed the life of a suspected rebel remnant of the dismantled Central Negros 2, and the recovery of an M16 assault rifle with ammunition, along with personal belongings.*
