Rebels claim killing of Cauayan laborer

• RICHARD T. CABALLERO JR.

The Armando Sumayang Jr. Command- New People’s Army (ASJC-NPA) Southwest Negros Guerrilla Front claimed responsibility for the death of a laborer gunned down in the mountainous area of Sitio Sinuwayan, Barangay Camalandaan, in the town of Cauayan, Negros Occidental, on September 15.

After the gun attack was reported to the police, the NPA released a statement claiming the death of Tabor, who they said was slain due to their accusation that the victim was an intelligence asset of the 15th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and a traitor of their group.

The ASJC-NPA added that Tabor was a former member of their group who returned to the government in 2023 and served as an intel asset of the 15th IB.

The crime took place at around 11 p.m. when the victim Joshua Tabor was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen while in a drinking session at the house of his companion who was celebrating his birthday.

The two unidentified male suspects reportedly arrived and ordered the victim to go out of the house.

Upon reaching the door, the suspects, armed with long firearms, suddenly shot the victim multiple times, hitting him on the different parts of his body, which resulted in his death.

During the attack, one of the celebrant’s family members, a 19-year-old female who was standing at the doorway, was hit on her left arm by a stray bullet.

This is the 14th insurgency-related killing reported in the province of Negros Occidental since January this year.*
