In an effort to reduce gun-related violence, the Police Regional Office – Negros Island Region stepped up its campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms, which led to the seizure of assorted guns and arrest of 11 suspects, for the month of September.
Of the 11 search warrants implemented across the region, eight were carried out by the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) and three by the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO).
NOCPPO seized 10 firearms from eight arrested suspects, including three caliber .38 revolvers, two each for caliber .45 pistols and homemade shotguns, and one each for caliber .357 Magnum revolver and caliber .22 revolver.
On the other hand, NORPPO arrested three suspects and recovered two caliber .45 pistols and a caliber .38 revolver, with ammunition.
In a statement, PBrig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, regional police director of PRO-NIR, said that charges for illegal possession of firearms were already filed against the suspects, who are now locked up in jail.
Ibay said that intensified operations against loose firearms, and strict law enforcement are essential not only to deter crimes, but also to put an end to shooting incidents, bring offenders to justice, and safeguard communities.
He also reminded firearm holders to strictly comply with regulations by securing the necessary permits and licenses.
Ibay also encouraged the public to support voluntary surrender initiatives such as Oplan Katok to avoid legal consequences and promote responsible firearm ownership.*
