Renewed armed skirmishes between government forces and suspected New People’s Army rebels that separately ensued yesterday in Cauayan and Sipalay City in southern Negros Occidental, has triggered the evacuation of residents.

The running gun battle and pursuit operations, which were ongoing as of last night, reportedly took place at the boundary of Brgy. San Jose, Sipalay City, and Brgy. Baclao, Cauayan. More than 100 persons from Sitio Malipayon, Brgy. San Jose, Sipalay City, were reported to have sought refuge in safer areas

Brgy. Capt. Marlon Camillo of San Jose, Sipalay City, told Aksyon Radyo that the affected residents are temporarily staying at the barangay covered court, for their safety.

According to initial police reports, the first encounter took place yesterday in Brgy. Baclao, Cauayan, and then another gun battle ensued in Brgy. San Jose, Sipalay City, as Army soldiers pressed pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels.

It was not yet determined, as of last night, if there were injured sustained as a result of the two gun battles.

Additionally, Mayor John Rey Tabujara told DYHB that some residents in Brgy. Baclao, Cauayan, have also evacuated from their homes.*
