Sagaynon young footballers proved their might on the pitch as they grabbed the Governor’s Cup championship trophy in the 12-under category, besting 11 teams from the province.

The event, held at the Panaad Park and Stadium on November 12-13, ended with the Sagay team victorious after defeating Dolphin’s Football Club and earing all the special awards of the event.

Aside from the championship trophy, the 12-under team of Sagay City FC’s John Paul Nidar was awarded Best Midfielder, Macky Marquez – Best Defender, JC Baloco – Best Goalkeeper and Zhaan Roqino was named Most Valuable Player.

Head Coach Alfre Sebuha said that despite the challenges along the way, the players put their best foot forward to win every game.

“Being a champion begins from your commitment to practice and changing your ways and habits,” he said, adding “it’s all about consistency and commitment, and faith in God.”

The Sagay 12-under team is composed of their head coach, Assistant Coaches Micheal Sabaiton, Ian Treyes, and Kent Dela Cruz, and players Marfel Emacky Marquez, John Paul Nidar, Zhaan Rhez Roquio, JC Baloco, Brint Hillana, Rafael Gargar;

Assistant Coach Micheal Sabaiton also said that it is a challenge to train 158 players of the team coming from various age groups, but the experience allowed them to gain a lot of lessons and learnings that put them on the champion’s podium.

The coach also thanked the City Government and player’s parents and guardians for their support, especially in the journey of these young athletes in winning the Governor’s Cup.

The tournament is one of the programs for grassroots sports development of the provincial government through the Provincial Sports Office, to provide opportunities for young athletes and hone their skills in various sporting events.

Through these programs, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson aims to provide more opportunities for the Negrense youth to foster their interests and abilities in various sports activities.*
