Sagaynon volleybelle Reyann Cañete was named as the best opposite spiker of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 97.*

Reyann Cañete, a resident of Brgy. Paraiso, Sagay City, was named as the best opposite spiker of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 97 which concluded last month at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Cañete, who plays for the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags, was awarded during the closing ceremonies of the volleyball tournament of NCAA, where their team placed fourth.

This volleyball athlete was a proud alumna of Eusebio Lopez Memorial Integrated School before she was absorbed by various schools in high school and college.

She said that her father, Reynaldo, has helped her a lot in improving her volleyball skills and meeting coaches and trainers along the way.

When she started playing for ELMIS, she was absorbed by Mabini National High School and later by Sagay National High School. She then got a scholarship from Rizal Technological University where she studied senior high school.

She joined the San Sebastian College- Recoletos in 2019 and became a varsity player. She became a student-athlete taking up a degree in Business Administration Major in Human Resource Development Management.

As a volleyball player, she joined the Premier Volleyball League and NCAA season 96.

When NCAA 96 did not continue because of the pandemic, Cañete said she went back to Sagay and continued training at a local gym to maintain her physique.

“I always give my best during the game and I never expect to have an award as the Best opposite spiker,” she said, adding “I am most thankful to my teammates because they are all the reasons why I got it.”

Mayor Narciso “Narwin” Javelosa, Jr. lauded the athlete for bringing pride and honor to her family and City.

He said Sagay has been known to have enthusiasts of the game and emphasized that we should harness their interests and skills.

Meanwhile, Cañete plans to continue to play under the Lady Stags team as she still has three more years as a varsity volleyball player.*
