San Carlos Bishop elected head of CBCP social action arm, Caritas Philippines

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza has been elected as president of Caritas Philippines, and chairperson of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice, and Peace.

Alminaza replaced Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo of Kidapawan, who held the position since 2019.

The announcement was made during the recent 130th Plenary Assembly of the CBCP held in Anda, Bohol.

Caritas Philippines, the Church’s national humanitarian and development arm, works closely with diocesan social action centers across the country and represents the Philippine Church in the global Caritas Confederation.

Known for his strong advocacy on environmental protection, human rights, and social justice, Bishop Alminaza will now lead the Church’s efforts in promoting justice, peace, and integral human development through Caritas Philippines.

In a statement posted on its social media account, the Diocesan Social Communications – San Carlos said the appointment of Bishop Alminaza is not only an honor, but a confirmation of his tireless service, courageous witness, and compassionate leadership.

Alminaza is widely regarded as one of the Church’s most outspoken voices for the poor and marginalized.

He is also expected to lead efforts focused on poverty alleviation, ecological protection, disaster response, and peacebuilding.*
