San Carlos City through the Tourism Office held its first dive caravan and underwater photography contest, which eight registered divers participated in on July 8 at Sipaway Island.

The competition kicked off with an opening ceremony at Park Marina Hall where participants were briefed on the competition’s guidelines including a video presentation showcasing the Camotes and St. John Reefs situated within the Marine Protected Area (MPA) of the city along Tañon Strait which is rich in marine biodiversity.

Categories of the competition include macro shot, wide angle and environment where they need to submit the original shots and the edited copies of the photos on July 9 for the awarding.

City Administrator Atty. Estefanio Libutan Jr. attended the opening event on behalf of City Mayor Renato Gustilo.

Libutan said that “it is a good thing the local tourism office came up with an idea that will help promote our dive sites as well as highlight marine protection, preservation and conservation.”

Danny Ocampo, senior campaign manager of OCEANA Philippines and the competition’s judge, said it is a privilege for someone like them to see what others cannot, citing the underwater beauty.

He also told participants to just have fun and enjoy the contest.

Jennifer Paran, city’s tourism operations officer, said that their office is grateful for all the support they got from the city government for the conduct of the contest where they were able to showcase the beauty of the marine resources and diving spots of Sipalay.

Paran also recognized the efforts of their partners, especially the CEMO-Coastal Resource Management Division (Bantay Dagat), the PNP- Maritime Group for their active support to their team, and Whispering Palms Island Resort as major sponsor of the activity.

“Thank you to all who made this event possible. We hope that this is not the first and last of this activity, but the beginning of so much to explore and accomplish in the future,” she said.

Also present during the event were the staff of the Tourism Office and City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) who helped facilitate the activity.*
