The San Carlos City Sports Office, through the Philippine Taekwondo Association and 2023 Smart MVP Sports Foundation Regional Age Group, held its 3rd taekwondo championships on July 16, at the San Carlos City Auditorium in Negros Occidental.
At least 361 individuals from 12 cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental and Oriental joined the taekwondo championships where winners received medals and trophies.
The event consists of Pomsae (forms) and Kyurugi (sparring).
The Pomsae consisted of three events: individual, mix, and team pomsae, while Kyurugi consisted of five categories: 8-under (toddlers), 9-11 grade school (novice 1 and 2), 12-14 years old cadet (advanced novice 1 and novice 2), 15-17 years old juniors (advanced novice 1 and 2), and 18-over seniors (advanced).
Taekwondo coordinator Darwin Jumuad Requina said the event is aimed at enhancing the technical skills and scientific techniques of the taekwondo players.
He added they are now using an electronic scoring system called Local Protector and Scoring System (LPSS) for scoring that determines the valid point or points installed on the head and trunk of the players.
Requina also encouraged the youth to play sports instead of gadgets and extended his gratitude to San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo, Vice Mayor Christopher Paul Carmona, and Executive Assistant Jesus Facundo Combate Jr. for the continued support of every taekwondo event.
Meanwhile, Combate welcomed the participants, coaches, and parents for participating in the taekwondo tournament, in line with the celebration of San Carlos City’s 63rd Charter Anniversary.*
