“In our quest for reliable energy, we are uncovering the hidden treasures of the underground cable projects, one of which, is the Underground Distribution System (UDS) initiated by the Negros Power with the launching of the one-kilometer UDS Project along LA son St., with a ceremonial groundbreaking on November 13,” Power Watch Negros secretary-general Wennie Sancho said in a press release.
The project which, will kick off next year, is aimed at placing all overhead wires underground, he said.
“Just as treasure hunters dig to uncover hidden riches underground, underground cable projects discover a treasure of love and benefits for the electricity consumers. Like hidden treasures, underground cables shield our distribution lines against extreme and damage, ensuring consistent power supply,” Sancho said in praise of the project.
Underground Distribution System (UDS) project is a roadmap to sustainability, a roadmap for the 5-year Development Plan of the Negros Power and more importantly, a roadmap for the consumers of the Negros Island Region, he added.
“Power Watch Negros and ACCESS are urging all stakeholders that, in our quest to reliable energy, let us dig deep to uncover the treasures of underground cabling for a brighter, safer and more sustainable future. By understanding the economic benefits and success stories of underground cable projects, consumers in the power industry can make informed decision about our energy infrastructure.
Reliability runs deep, Sancho said, adding that “the power of progress is beneath our feet. We are uncovering progress, one cable at a time.”
The cost-to-benefit ratio, compares the expenses of the Underground Distribution System (UDS), to its advantage for Negros Power consumers. The initial investment is P1.5 billion to P2.5 billion. Annual maintenance is approximately P50 million to P100 million, with a total cost of about P1.55 billion to P2.6 billion (over 10 years).
The estimated benefits would be reduced power outages (P200 million/year.) Increased property values (P500 million to P1 billion over 5 years.) Improved quality – is priceless. The cost-to-benefits ratio is 1.5 to 3.1(estimated). For every P1 invested, consumers can expect about P 1.50 to P 3.00 in benefits, he claimed.
The break-even point estimated within 5-7 years would be, the Underground Distribution System (UDS) of Negros Power is expected to pay for itself, within 5 to 7 years through reduced losses, energy savings and increased property values.
The Negros Power consumers are projected to save in terms of reduced electricity bills to about 0.05.0/kWh savings for small household (100-200kWh/month) which would translate to about P600 to P1,200 per year. These are minimal gains for the consumers. Nevertheless, these small golden nuggets that would benefit the consumers to advance their welfare, came from the treasure of the underground cable project, Sancho added.*
