Sancho praises Negros Power linemen

The secretary-general of the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) commends the linemen workers of Negros Power for their unwavering dedication to duty, notwithstanding their dangerous exposure to extreme weather conditions, a press release from GAWA said.

Wennie Sancho said GAWA would like to highlight the vital importance and the risks involved in the dangerous task of the brave men and women of Negros Power for “keeping the lights on”. It is high time that we should pay tribute, honoring these workers for powering through danger and for maintaining the lines with courage.

They are the “unsung heroes”. We, in GAWA, the working class, salute them. Their unparalleled devotion to duty should be appreciated by all the stakeholders of the power industry, he said.

One of the vital importance of their work is ensuring public safety. Linemen prevent electrical hazards protecting communities from fire, electrocution and other accidents. To maintain reliable energy supply, they repair power lines, ensuring uninterrupted electricity for homes, businesses and essential services, Sancho’s press release added.

Linemen support economic development by providing reliable power for industries, commerce and agriculture. In times of emergency they swiftly restore power during natural disasters, facilitating rescue operations and humanitarian efforts. In terms of community development linemen enable education, healthcare and communication service by maintaining power infrastructure, he said.

Sancho said the risks and challenges faced by the Negros Power linemen includes possible electrocution and electric shock due to exposure to high voltage power lines. They could suffer from falls while working at elevated heights often in challenging weather conditions. They experience physical strains due to heavy lifting, climbing and working in confined places. They are working in extreme temperatures, rain, winds and storms, suffering from fatigue and stress due to extended work periods.

We should express our public support and recognition to the linemen of Negros Power and express our gratitude through social media. We should launch a “Thank You Campaign” and offer moral support and prayer for the linemen’s safety, he said.

GAWA shall support policies promoting linemen’s welfare, safety and fair compensation, pushed for enhanced benefits, insurance and protection for linemen. GAWA shall collaborate with Negros Power and stakeholders to enhance advocacy efforts to successfully highlight the vital contribution and sacrifices of the Negros Power linemen, the press release concluded.*
