Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Erika Caitlyn Dy led a high-level visit on April 29 to 30, to finalize preparations for the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers 2026, set on June 2 to 6, marking a major step in Bacolod City’s push to host a key international basketball event.

Dy met with Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya during a coordination meeting at his office in the New Government Center. Discussions focused on logistics, venue readiness, and inter-agency coordination as the City of Smiles gears up to welcome teams from across Southeast Asia, a press release said.

Joining Dy were SBP Technical Head Andrew Teh and key members of the national federation, including Lovella Gubat, Veronica Veluz, Mary Hazel Yambot, and Nante Azores.

As part of the visit, the delegation conducted an ocular inspection of the tournament’s main venue, the STI West Negros University Gymnasium, as well as the designated practice facility at the Bacolod City Multi-Purpose Center and Skate Park (MICES Gym). The inspections focused on ensuring compliance with international standards, including playing conditions, athlete accommodations, and spectator readiness.

Dy also spearheaded contract signings with partner hotels Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod and Seda Capitol Central Bacolod, securing accommodations for participating teams, officials, and event personnel.

Supporting the initiative is SBP Zone 7, led by Tony Agustin, which played a key role in coordinating local efforts and strengthening stakeholder engagement across Negros Island. As a newly established zone, SBP Zone 7’s involvement signals its growing capacity to deliver large-scale programs and contribute to national sports development.

City officials and SBP leaders described the visit as a critical milestone, reinforcing Bacolod’s capability to host international competitions while advancing grassroots and elite basketball programs in the region.

The upcoming qualifiers are expected to draw top young talent from Southeast Asia, placing Bacolod on a wider sporting stage and boosting its long-term vision to become a leading hub for sports tourism and development in the Philippines.

Final venue preparations and detailed event schedules are expected to be released in the coming weeks as coordination between SBP and the city government continues.*
