Kanlaon Volcano recorded an increase in seismic activity on Tuesday, according to the 24-hour monitoring bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
In the advisory, PHIVOLCS said 176 volcanic earthquakes were detected from 12 a.m. of September 15 to 12 a.m. of the 16th, a sharp rise from 72 volcano-tectonic (VT) quakes observed in previous days.
The volcano also released 1,071 tons of sulfur dioxide on Sept. 15, a reduction from 2,338 tons the previous day, and emitted a plume that rose 600 to meters.
PHIVOLCS said the volcano’s edifice remains inflated.
Alert Level 2 prevails over Kanlaon Volcano.
The Office of Civil Defense reminded local government officials to remain vigilant for a possible eruption of the Kanlaon Volcano, noting its increased seismic activity.
PHIVOLCS said the increase in VT events could raise the chances of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, or short-lived weak to moderately explosive eruptions at the summit.*
