Seismic, degassing activities continue at Kanlaon

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded five ash emission events, from five minutes to 116 minutes long, on January 3.

Aside from the 27 volcanic quakes, including nine volcanic tremors at Kanlaon volcano, PHIVOLCS said that Kanlaon also continues to emit sulfur dioxide gas.

State volcanologists said that the volcano spewed 4,861 tons of gas on Thursday, with the degassing activity generating plumes that rose 300 meters from the summit and drifted west and northwest.

PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon’s edifice remains inflated, as alert Level 3, or magmatic unrest, prevails over the volcano.

Negros Occidental disaster officials led by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson will meet with representatives of the Office of the Civil Defense and Phivolcs next week, to discuss the fate of internally displaced persons (IDPs) being housed at different evacuation centers.

As reported by the Department of Health Negros Island Region, there are 4,325 families, composed of 13,920 individuals, occupying 34 evacuation centers in La Castellana, as well as the cities of Bago, La Carlota, and San Carlos in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

On the other hand, the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and Bacolod City Police Office donated 50 sacks of rice intended for IDPs in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

P/Colonels Rainerio de Chavez and Joeresty Coronica personally led the turnover of 50 sacks of rice to La Castellana Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor Mangilimutan on Friday.*
