Senate junking of VP impeachment slammed

The General Alliance of Workers Assn. (GAWA) condemned the resolution passed by the Senate junking the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.

GAWA secretary general Wennie Sancho declared in a press statement that the Senate, once a beacon of hope and accountability, has committed a grievous betrayal. By abandoning its mandate and shirking its duty, the Senate has effectively stabbed democracy in the back.

The people’s trust has been shattered, and the Senate’s credibility lies in tatters. The Senate’s dereliction of duty has allowed grave injustice to go unchecked and the very fabric of democracy has been torn apart, Sancho said.

The 19 Senators who voted to junk the impeachment case have, in effect, become accomplices to the erosion of accountability and transparency. Their actions will be etched in history as a shameful reminder of the Senate’s failure to uphold its sacred duty to the people, he said.

Sancho’s statement said the archiving of the impeachment case against VP Duterte is a brazen act of betrayal, a stark reminder that those entrusted with power can easily become its abusers.

“The General Alliance of Workers Assn., together with the people will not stand idly as our rights are trampled upon and our voices silenced. We will not forget the Senate’s oath to serve the people nor will we forget their shameless deceit,” he said.

It is time to unite against the affront of democracy and demand accountability from those who have forgotten their duty, he added.

“Let us rise up and reclaim our Senate, our government and our democracy. Let us send a clear message that betrayal will not be tolerated and that those who abused their power will be held accountable. The people will not be silenced, we will not be deterred. We will fight for justice, for transparency and for truth,” Sancho said.

“We will not be silenced by procedural loopholes or partisan politics. We will stand together, steadfast in our pursuit of justice and transparency. We shall rise up, we shall demand justice and we shall be heard,” he said.

Meanwhile, the defense team of VP Sara acknowledges the Senate’s decision to adhere to the Supreme Court ruling and archive the Articles of Impeachment.

Our focus now remains on submitting our comment, in compliance with the High Court’s Order, an official statement from the defense team of VP Sara Duterte said.*
